There will be no extra charge for garden waste collection in Hertsmere until April 2025, after the decision was made to delay the introduction of a paid subscription service.
Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) previously agreed plans for a £50 annual collection fee in September 2023.
The council had wanted to use the estimated £870,000 income from the subscription to set up a new, free food waste collection service, but there was significant pushback from residents.
Now, the introduction of the charge has been delayed as HBC has accessed funds to enable the first year to be offered for free.
North Bushey Lib Dem councillor Paul Richards said: “Food waste collection is the key to reducing landfill and saving carbon, which is why the government is making it mandatory.
“Long-term, the council can’t afford to run the new service and maintain garden waste collection as part of council tax. But there’ll now be no garden charge until the new food bins arrive, making the transition easier for households.”
