AMAZING ANN: Ruislip woman takes on epic challenge to celebrate 100th birthday

A soon-to-be 100-year-old woman from Ruislip is walking the equivalent of the London Marathon for charity.

When Poplars Care Home resident Ann Johnson celebrates a century of birthdays this October, she hopes the special day will coincide with completing the remarkable fundraising challenge.

Care home worker Paul has supported Ann with regular walks and came up with the idea of celebrating Ann’s 100th birthday by walking the equivalent distance of the London Marathon. Ann will need to complete around 105 laps of the running track at King’s College Playing Fields in Ruislip to achieve the 26.2-mile distance.

Ann was diagnosed with macular disease 30 years ago, an eye condition that affects her vision. She has chosen to raise money and awareness for Macular Society, who have provided support to her, as well as to raise money for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Poplars director Sam Cader said: “Ann has experience of sight loss and the devastation it can cause, and has been determined to do what she can to help others in a similar position.

“Ann is not in the least bit nervous; she is excited and determined to do the best that she can.”

Ann has always considered exercise to be of utmost importance.

She said: “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it!

“I have wonderful support around me; Paul and all at Poplars and also my family and friends. I want to do all I can to give something back and to help others.”

Updates on Ann’s progress can be found online here.
