A Bushey resident has started a petition to ensure that no child is refused food at school, no matter the status of their lunch account balance.
Schools across the country use a form of online payments for lunches, where parents must top their child’s lunch account balance up to ensure they have enough to cover the cost of meals every day.
Georgina Carapiet from Bushey believes children whose parents have failed to top up the lunch balance should still be fed.
On her Change.org petition, she said: “Every day, schoolchildren are refused food or a meal at school for lunch because the lunch account balance has insufficient funds.
“Sadly, on many occasions, this is due to the parents struggling financially and unable to qualify for free school meals for their children whether in secondary or primary school.
“Many medical experts claim that children need a good meal to focus and thrive in their day.
“Refusing a child food on the grounds of insufficient credit is robbing them of the opportunity and right to focus and thrive.”
