“ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS”: Signs banning parking in Bushey removed and defaced multiple times

Residents in Bushey have removed and defaced a sign banning them from parking in their usual spaces.

Speaking to BUSHEYnews, resident Lawrie Nutley says residents are “up in arms” after 14 parking spaces between Fidler Place and Baird Close, at the bottom of Ashfield Avenue, were sold by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC). Two months ago, signs were erected banning people from parking in the slots under the threat of a £100 fine.

Lawrie says it is “unknown” why HCC chose to sell off the spaces as there was insufficient parking even when they were available. Now, he says the situation has significantly worsened with residents, including Blue Badge holders, forced to park “streets away”.

The new owners of the spaces applied for planning permission to build four garages along with electric vehicle chargers, but this was refused. Now, the spaces are lying empty despite residents struggling to find somewhere to park, something Lawrie feels is “just daft”. Lawrie says this has caused “major ill feeling” amongst residents. Since being installed, the signs have been removed or defaced and subsequently replaced five times.

He said: “We’re all very angry as the parking is absolutely ridiculous as it is. The slots were put there when the estate was originally built for residents – they should never have been sold. We’re trying to find out why. It’s an ongoing battle.”

“They’re just lying empty, but we have been told by the council that since it’s private property, the owners can do what they want.”

Lib Dem councillor for Bushey Park Marc Amron said: “Residents are being asked to pay to park in front of their own houses, because part of the public highway has seemingly been flogged off.

“It’s outrageous, and I’m determined to get to the bottom of it.

“We have asked HCC to explain how on earth this could happen.”

HCC has been contacted for comment.
