£9,000 RAISED: Fundraiser for Ruislip football and darts fan battling terminal cancer raises thousands

Published on: 27th April 2021   |   By: News Bulletin   |   Category: Uncategorized

A fundraiser for 53-year-old Martin Deacon, a lifelong Queens Park Rangers (QPR) FC and darts fan, who was diagnosed with terminal gallbladder cancer in September 2020, has already raised over £9,000 for the local hospice caring for him.

Ruislip-based Martin, now an inpatient at Michael Sobell Hospice, Mount Vernon Hospital, has been visiting the unit a couple of days a week since he was diagnosed for respite and care.

Commenting about her father’s care, Martin’s daughter, Katie Deacon, said: “It can be quite daunting coming to visit your family member in a hospice when they are sick. I remember my first time visiting my Dad, I felt very anxious as I didn’t know what to expect. I had no need to worry. Michael Sobell Hospice is so homely, and the staff and volunteers are all so kind.

“Our Dad has a lovely room which overlooks the garden. The team are also very supportive to the families of the patients which I think is just as important when you’re going through such a hard time.”

A fundraising campaign to raise money for Michael Sobell Hospice, set up by Martin’s two sons, Sam and George, and his wife Julie Deacon, has so far raised £9,120, and the family have also seen support from QPR, with a donation of a signed first team football shirt, plus a signed Michael Van Gerwen shirt in recognition of Martin’s love of darts!

“I have lots of fond memories of my Dad taking myself and my two brothers to games at Loftus Road,” commented Katie.

“On behalf of my Dad and all the family, I must say a big thank you to everyone who has donated to, and supported our fundraising campaign, and also to my Dad’s friends who have helped to organise our charity golf day at Shendish Manor taking place in a couple of weeks.”
