3,000 HOMES: Residents voice concerns over ‘radical change’ to green belt in Bushey

“This will decimate our green belt” is the warning given by the Bushey Forum, who recently met to discuss proposals for 3,000 new homes in the town.

The Bushey Forum is a neighbourhood assembly which meets to discuss matters of importance that affect the lives of residents in the absence of a parish council.

In their latest meeting on Tuesday, March 11, the Forum discussed how the “absence of a Local Plan has resulted in speculative applications and proposals across Bushey for 3,000 new homes”.

Residents discussed how the proposals could impact on current local infrastructure and resources, including GPs, roads, parking and schools.

In a flyer shared in the lead-up to the meeting, the Forum shared: “As a community, Bushey residents must make their voices heard in the face of this radical change!”

One of the biggest proposals is the Heathbourne Green development, which includes around 1,300 new homes and other amenities.

One of the key concerns raised was the access to the new homes, which Forum chair Philip Nowlan said: “It has been proposed access will be given through Little Green Lane, where there is already a lot of traffic congestion around.”

He also added: “We need more homes but there are three different applications for where I live.”

Bushey Town Crier Marco said: “The meeting was superbly chaired by Philip Nowlan who is fully conversant and highly dedicated in working for the community.

“Concern was mentioned regarding infrastructure of roads, traffic, schools and medical services.

“Support was mentioned in favour of constructing new homes on the basis of a national shortage.”

Helen Hamlyn Centre of Design, The Design Age Institute, The Royal College of Art, London said: “Heathbourne Green represents a remarkable opportunity …by envisioning a community that prioritises inclusivity, accessibility, and the holistic well-being of its residents.

“Recognizing the significance of community infrastructure in catering to the needs of ageing populations, the development of Heathbourne Green holds the potential to set a national and international standard for age-friendly environments and will contribute into wider research that will help current and future generations to live better.”

An extract of Community Involvement from Cavendish said: “”An exemplary and comprehensive pre-application consultation process partnering with local and national organisations, surpassing expectations set out in local and national policy, was undertaken in advance of submitting a planning application to Hertsmere Borough Council.

“This engagement was further complemented by a range of direct and targeted engagement conducted by the Design Age Institute of The Helen Hamlyn Centre of Design as part of the Royal College of Art in addition to the Oxford Institute for Population Ageing, which allowed Trulocom and its team to work towards co-producing elements of the proposals.”
