30 HOMES: New homes could be built on site of former Abbots Langley care home

A former Abbots Langley care home could be demolished and replaced with 30 new homes.

In 2020, AbbotsNews reported on the closure of Margaret House Care Home after Quantum Care found that the building was no longer fit for purpose. Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) concurred that it was not cost-effective to make the necessary changes.

The building has stood empty since October 2020, but developer Herts Living Ltd (HLL) has now outlined proposals for its redevelopment.

In a public consultation report, they stated: “HCC has an ambitious programme of new care home provision across the county and a number of new care homes have been built or are in the process of being delivered. HLL is therefore looking to redevelop the site to provide 30 new homes of a range of sizes and types to help meet local demand.

“The proposal offers a total of 30 new homes. This avoids a loss in overall residential accommodation.

“The site is currently characterised by a drop in ground level marked by localised retaining walls and banking. Following the removal of the existing building, it is proposed to remove any retaining features and reinstate the natural slope of the ground as can be found along the site boundaries. The new buildings benefit from a much smaller footprint and will be set at varying levels along that slope. This approach will allow all footpaths and cycle routes to be accessible, following a natural slope without steps or ramps.”
