To have the highest rank in taekwondo is a rare feat, but one that two students from a Croxley club have now achieved.
Though a huge success, it was only one of multiple outstanding awards celebrated at the club’s 10th anniversary event on Friday, December 13.
Having met at a taekwondo club, Russell and Monique struggled to find one for their two children to join in 2014.
They decided to use their experience to open Rusty Taekwondo with the aim of becoming “a home for the community”, as well as a place to help young people build their confidence.
The classes run on Mondays and Fridays for various age ranges, and participants are taught techniques such as basic kicking, punching and blocking.
To recognise their hard work, parents and students came together to enjoy cake, drinks and plenty of sweets last month.
Marking a first in the history of the club, the two black belts were celebrated for their achievements. At only 15 years old, original member Francesco showed all the tenets of taekwondo to get his belt. Meanwhile, assistant coach Alex started at Rusty Taekwondo with his children around four years ago.
Speaking to CROXLEYnews, Russell said: “[Francesco and Alex] faced challenges and developed skills that go beyond just kicking and punching. Achieving a black belt is not an easy task; it’s a journey that requires time, commitment, and perseverance.
“I started this as a small taekwondo club and it has turned into a growing taekwondo family and an enjoyable club.”
Continuing the sense of community spirit, the group also clubbed together to support those in need this Christmas. They donated a range of items, as they do every year, to a Watford homeless charity.
