£2,500 THEFT: Man arrested following theft in Watford thanks to new security radio

A man has been arrested following a theft at the Atria shopping centre in Watford.

On Saturday, October 12, it was reported that a man had stolen two mobile phones from the Apple store.

Staff in the shop used the ShopWatch radio which alerted security staff, CCTV operators and local officers who were able to respond immediately.

Officers tracked a suspect to the High Street station where a man in his 20s was located and arrested on suspicion of theft. Also found in his possession was £2,500 worth of phones.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Watford Neighbourhood Inspector Dan Jones said: “This is a great example of how the ShopWatch radio can help combat retail crime. Due to the quick actions of colleagues at Apple, this incident was escalated promptly to security staff, CCTV operators and officers, which enabled us to arrest a suspect and recover the suspected stolen items.

“If any businesses wish to join the scheme or would like to find out more, please get in touch by contacting Watford@herts.police.uk.”
