Young songwriters hit the right note

Published on: 1st February 2018   |   By: Jason Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Two talented, young Hertfordshire songwriters will take to the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall in March to perform their own compositions.

Leona Tindall and Miriam Nyarko were chosen for this prestigious opportunity following their participation in Hertfordshire Music Service’s Songwriter programme. The girls, along with many other young people from across the county, attended workshops in music centres and uploaded their songs to the online Songwriter chart at songwriteronline.co.uk.

At the event – the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala – on March 11, Leona, 14, from St Albans, will perform her coming-of-age song ‘Changes’ with the backing of her band, while Miriam, 15, who attended Songwriter workshops in Watford, will perform her uplifting number ‘Rise’ with fellow songwriter Chiarra Parrella on piano.

Councillor Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Education, Libraries and Localism, said: “Songwriter has been running in Hertfordshire since 2002 and has put the county on the map as a place that develops talented, original musicians.

“We are constantly impressed by the standard of the songs being uploaded to the Songwriter chart, but Leona and Miriam really stood out for the maturity and insight of their lyrics, catchy melodies and powerful performances.

“We are delighted to help them perform their own music to such a huge audience and wish them luck on the night.”

Although the chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall is only available every two years, Songwriter provides a wealth of on-going opportunities for budding young songwriters to develop their skills and perform their music. Weekly songwriting clubs and school holiday workshops run at music centres across the county and there are regular showcases where young people can perform their music in front of family and friends. As well as helping to improve musical skills, Songwriter is also a great way for young people to meet other young musicians in their area and a number of bands, partnerships and lasting friendships have been formed at the clubs and workshops.

For young people itching to get started on their big hit, there are half-term workshops taking place in Watford on Tuesday 13 February, Hatfield on Wednesday 14 February and Hitchin on Friday 16 February.  For full details and to book your place, visit songwriteronline.co.uk
