Collision involving ambulance in St Albans leaves two with serious injuries

Police were called to Watford Road, St Albans, at around 10.05am this morning following a two-vehicle road traffic collision involving an ambulance and a Volkswagen Polo. The ambulance was reported to be on its side. Four ambulances, two officers, a hazardous area response team and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene, to provide care to four patients. A man, thought to be in his 50s, has been flown to the Royal London with critical injuries, and an elderly female with a serious head injury and suspected fracture was taken to Watford Hospital by land ambulance. The two members of staff in the ambulance were taken to Watford Hospital, one with a chest injury and another with minor injuries. The ambulance did not have a patient on board but was responding on blue lights to an emergency 999 call at the time of the incident. That patient has been seen and cared for by a paramedic. The road is currently closed at the junction with St Stephens Avenue and Abbey Avenue while emergency services work at the scene.
