YOUNG IDEAS: Northwood schoolgirls design inventions for road safety competition

Two Northwood schoolgirls were recently invited to a presentation with the Mayor of Hillingdon to celebrate their success in a competition.

Year 6 student Tara and Year 3 pupil Kaya, from St Helen’s School, came joint-second in a Hillingdon Council contest asking schoolchildren to design inventions to improve road safety.

Kaya came up with a smart drone which is able to monitor the road and can intervene in dangerous situations. It comes equipped with the ability to alert first responders as well as multiple tools to assist road users in need.

Tara’s invention is a breathalyser that would be installed in the car’s ignition system. The idea is that a driver would have to blow into the device before starting their car. If the device found that the alcohol level in the driver’s breath exceeded the legal limit, the car wouldn’t start.

Tara and Kaya attended the presentation with Mayor of Hillingdon councillor Shehryar Ahmad-Wallana.

A spokesperson for St Helen’s School said: “We are immensely proud of both Tara and Kaya and look forward to possibly seeing their inventions brought to life in the not-too-distant future!”
