Residents from Harrow flocked to the latest Xcite job fair on this week which this time introduced two new schemes to help residents with career progression and training.
Various opportunities were provided by recruiters on October 22 from retail giants, care agencies and construction companies. Local training providers including Harrow College, and Learn Direct also provided residents with information on opportunities to improve their skills and get the relevant qualifications. Gasira Ali, 28 from Harrow Weald said: “The job fair was very useful and interesting and I didn’t know about the many vacancies available in the borough. I’ve been looking for part time work while I am studying and have found out about local jobs that I wasn’t aware of, so I will be applying for these roles.” The latest job fair also introduced the Earn and Learn, and the Skills Escalator scheme giving Harrow residents an opportunity to change career direction or think about going into supervision or team leader posts by taking advantage of the new schemes from Harrow Council. Both the Earn and Learn and the Skills Escalator scheme help residents earning less than £20,000 improve their skills through training and then progress in their careers. The schemes have been supported with £75,000 funding from the council. The council have funded NVQ Level 3 in Adult Social Care, plumbing qualifications and will consider any carefully thought through suggestion that would help them improve their job prospects. The job fair also had presentations and seminars were also held by Harrow Council’s Xcite team, Learn Direct Wilkinsons on topics such as customer service, budget management and how to access Earn & Learn. Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for business, planning and regeneration said: “It is fantastic to see that so many people have come today to find out about the jobs that are available locally and training opportunities to further improve their skills. I would also like to say thank you to the many organisations that came to offer help, support and opportunities to our residents. Supporting our residents is a top priority and it is fantastic to see so many people attend today’s event. We have also helped two new schemes with £75,000 funding to help residents on low pay into training so they have a chance to improve their skills and pay.” The Xcite job fair puts residents in direct contact with employers and training providers allowing them to get the best advice and support to help them further in their careers.
