Bovingdon has quietly claimed a unique honour with a special plant tucked away in a charming local garden.
The family-run nursery Home Farm Plants was recognised as the winner of Plant Heritage’s Threatened Plant of the Year 2025 competition on Tuesday, July 8.
The competition calls for passionate gardeners across the UK to search for rare or unusual varieties of plants. This year, a Delphinium elatum ‘Alice Artindale’ grown in Bovingdon was chosen as the worthy winner.
When they set eyes on the plant 15 years ago, owners of Home Farm Plants Graham and Nina Austin knew straight away that the plant was a rare species.
Having cared for it ever since, the now take cuttings to help spread the rare and beautiful plant into more gardens.
Graham said: “We’ve been working hard to look after it and now take cuttings so others can enjoy its beauty too. We are delighted it’s won Plant Heritage’s Threatened Plant of the Year 2025.”
