Working together for Safer Streets in Watford

Published on: 20th October 2017   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

A scheme to take essential crime prevention and information to residents in Watford continued this weekend when officers visited residents in the Hollywell area of the town. Police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) from the Watford Safer Neighbourhood Teams visited 800 properties in the area as part of the Safer Streets campaign. During the afternoon on Sunday (July 20), residents were given delivering essential advice, targeted to crimes and issues affecting the area. Residents were also given the opportunity to raise any issues about crime and anti-social behaviour, and sign up to Neighbourhood Watch. The teams were joined by police volunteers, officers from the Special Constabulary and Neighbourhood Watch members. Local Councillors Matthew Turmaine, Nigel Bell and Jackie Connal also came to show their support for the scheme. As a result of the scheme:

  • 231 residents were spoken to.
  • 149 new people were signed up to receive information and updates from police via the OWL (Online Watch Link) messaging system
  • 94 joined Neighbourhood Watch, a scheme which is proven to help combat crime.
  • 34 residents were identified as needing extra help in securing their property and were referred on to receive help from the Hertfordshire Home and Security Service.
  • Many residents also used the opportunity to raise concerns they had about crime and anti-social behaviour which local officers can help to address.

Chief Inspector for Watford Dave Wheatley said: “This scheme has been running in Watford for nine months now and continues to take place on a monthly basis. These events help us to speak to people who may not ordinarily come into contact with police, including those who may be particularly vulnerable to crime and may need extra help and support.
