WING WALK: Chalfont Mums make finals of fundraising team of the year at national awards

Published on: 11th August 2024   |   By: Annabel Stock   |   Category: Uncategorized

A group of mums, which includes a Chalfont St Peter resident, is in the finals for JustGiving’s Fundraising Team of the Year Award.

Rebecca Gaskell lost her teenage daughter, Grace, to brain cancer in 2020. She is a member of the Angel Mums, a group of eight mothers who work together to raise funds in memory of their children.

After completing a skydive in October of last year, the Angel Mums set themselves a challenge for 2024 which they have named Earth, Wind and Fire. They kickstarted the challenge by climbing Mount Snowdon on Saturday, May 18; braved a wing walk on Saturday, July 20; and are set to feel the heat with a fire walk in October.

Rebecca said: “I’m scared of heights so I don’t know why, but I’ve always wanted to do a wing walk. I felt really blessed to have that experience. The G-force was serious – it was like being on a rollercoaster on a bar stool on a plane! It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever done.”

So far, from the Earth and Wind challenges, the group has raised a whopping £119,934 for the Tessa Jowell Foundation, a charity set up to fund brain cancer treatment and research.

They have now been nominated as one of three finalists from 18,000 nominees for the Fundraising Team of the Year Award at the JustGiving Awards.

Rebecca says she is particularly looking forward to meeting retired javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread MBE, who is a finalist for Celebrity Fundraiser of the Year in the JustGiving Awards.

She said: “She was a real childhood hero of mine because I used do track events as a child. She came to visit my school and I had a photo with her!”

The awards will be held at The Roundhouse in London on Wednesday, September 18. You can vote for the Angel Mums at www.shorturl.at/vgMrI and donate to their fundraiser at www.justgiving.com/page/angelmums2024
