WAYNE’S FUND: Abbots Langley charity donates defibrillator to vehicle repair shop

An Abbots Langley charity has donated a defibrillator to a local industrial estate.

Ross Hateley of Japex Automotive in Kings Langley has personal understanding of the necessity of having defibrillators readily available.

In September 2020, Ross’ then four-year-old son Lawson collapsed suddenly after colliding with another pupil on the playground at Abbots Langley Primary School.

Six months to a year after the incident, the family heard that it was a Wayne’s Fund defibrillator that had been used to save Lawson’s life.

Wayne’s Fund was started after Abbots resident Wayne Pope suddenly passed away aged just 30. The defibrillator installed in the reception of Japex Automotive is the 98th the charity has installed, with three lives saved to date.

Two years after collapsing on the playground, Lawson cycled 20km from Tring to Abbots Langley, raising £3,000 for Wayne’s Fund, enough for the charity to be able to provide a further two defibrillators.

Ross said: “We’ve always wanted to get one ever since [the incident]. They need constant support and donations. It’s a strange thing; they’re always looking to provide something that they hope will never need to be used.”

Wayne’s brother Glynn said: “This defib will be a reassurance to Kings Langley Business Park and the local area, should there be an emergency. We are very grateful to [Ross] for wanting this support for others in his working community.”
