‘FUNNY FIG’: Author from Amersham releases first book in new series for children

Published on: 19th January 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

An author from Amersham has published the first in a series of children’s books aimed at helping youngsters navigate social experiences.

Claire Smith self-published Funny Fig in November and has already written the 25 other stories comprising The A to Z Patch series. The manuscripts had been safely stored away in a cupboard for months – and some even for years – since Claire wrote them during her own son’s early childhood.

When her mother unexpectedly passed away and she was let go from work in 2022, Claire decided to revisit the stories she’d written for her son.

She said: “I wanted to get the stories out of the cupboard and began working with an illustrator. I already knew in my mind what Funny Fig looked like, and I knew this story would be the first I’d turn into a book.”

Funny Fig tells the story of a character who likes to make their little sister laugh by pulling faces, shaking their bottom and blowing raspberries. The book also teaches young readers important lessons about communication and empathy along the way.

Claire said: “Since November, I’ve done readings in nurseries and schools in Amersham, and I’ve seen that the children feel good by the end of the book!

“Amersham Library has been really supportive in hosting readings, and they now have a copy of Funny Fig on their shelves.”
