Published on: 6th August 2014   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

The declaration of World War I was commemorated with a spectacular vigil which took place at Watford’s Peace Memorial. On Monday, August 4 hundreds of people aged between five and 94 joined the Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill with candles and flowers to show their respects. The Mayor of Watford said: “One hundred years on from the start of the First World War, we are all connected either through our own family history, the heritage of our local community or because of its long-term impact on the world we live in today.” There was also a special commemoration service at St Mary’s Church on Sunday, August 3 where there were readings from the Mayor, Richard Harrington and Cllr George Derbyshire. The next month will see a variety of events to commemorate the war at Watford Museum including The Great War: Watford 1914 exhibition which will run until September 27.
