Watford Borough Council’s museum has been awarded the accreditation of VisitEngland’s Quality Assured Visitor Attraction continuing for eight successful years.
The museum was first awarded the Tourism Rosette in 2010. The award is testament to the museum’s rising visitor numbers and innovative events and activities.
The assessment praised the range of interesting items featured in the museum along with the beautiful gardens, which combine to create a great first impression and experience for visitors.
VisitEngland also acknowledged that the museum is in need of refurbishment and the facilities in need of modernisation.
Since opening in 1981 many of the displays have remained the same. In that time the museum’s collections have grown significantly, with new acquisitions arriving every month.
Watford Museum has received just over £175,000 development funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help progress plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. The funding will allow the museum to undergo an amazing and much needed transformation.
The restoration project will not only improve access and ensure the building is fit for purpose, it will also ensure visitors can really engage and interact with the amazing historical and art collections on display.

Watford Museum is open from Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Admission to Watford Museum is free.
