Cassiobury Farm and Fishery in Watford is celebrating the birth of a rare species of sheep.
Soay sheep are a breed of domestic sheep which descended from a population of feral sheep on the 100-hectare island of Soay. The Soay sheep currently sits in the ‘At Risk’ category of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust watchlist 2024-25.
In a post on social media, Cassiobury Farm and Fishery said: “We’re delighted to announce our first lamb of the season. With less than 1,500 breeding ewes left in the world, Soay are one of our domestic conservation species.
“Mum and baby are both doing well.”
The farm prioritises rare breeds from the UK and abroad, keeping small groups of each species and helping to home endangered and vulnerable species.
