WAT-ER JOKE!: Berkhamsted parliamentary candidate hits out at water company for price hike

Published on: 20th March 2024   |   By: Bryn Holmes   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Berkhamsted has labelled a price hike in water bills as “a slap in the face”.

Victoria Collins, who is currently campaigning to be the MP for the new Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency in the next general election, slammed the announcement that Thames Water will increase costs by an average of 12.1 per cent.

Victoria said: “A price hike during a cost-of-living crisis is a slap in the face to all those in our community who now have to pay more to water companies who have for years been pumping filthy sewage into our rivers.

“This insulting price hike should be scrapped.”

A Thames Water spokesperson said: “Investing in our services and providing support to customers with their bills is incredibly important to us. While charges for this year will increase, we recognise that we need to continue to improve overall customer experience and we have a refocused three-year plan to deliver a step change in our performance.

“Our typical bills will increase by 12.1 per cent on average. These changes are based on inflation, adjustments for allowed revenue recovery from previous years, changes to our customer base, and revenue adjustments for meeting more of our regulatory performance targets for our waste services than in the previous year.

“We offer a range of financial aid. We ask customers who are worried about paying their water bill to get in touch with us so we can get them the help they need. We’re also doubling the support we can provide to customers who are in arrears.”
