UNIQUE EXHIBITION: Northwood auction features Japanese swords

Published on: 7th November 2019   |   By: Jake Levison   |   Category: Uncategorized

Moor Park Golf Club will open up to members of the public for a limited time as it holds an exhibition for unique furniture, art and even Japanese arms and armour later this month.

Specialist auction house, The Pedestal, will be holding two auctions; the Patrick Donald Collection and Fine Interiors, at the Grade I listed Moor Park Mansion on Tuesday, November 19.

Viewing is open from Saturday, November 16.

Several rooms across the mansion will be set up to display the pre-auction exhibition, as well as the Orangery, a separate building.

Entry to view the auctions and to attend the auction itself is free and open to all.

Patrick Donald’s collection to be auctioned represent the former graphic designer’s twin passions: furniture, objects and paintings from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, and Japanese arms and armour and works of art.

It contains a wide selection of Japanese arms and their associated components, originally used and worn by the samurai and now considered to be works of art in their own right: daishō – long and short matched swords; tantō – a traditional sword; wakizashi – ‘side inserted’ sword; handachi – curved sword; katana – curved sword with a single blade; aikuchi – a form of mounting for small swords; tsuba – round protective guards placed at the end of the grip of a sword.
