Pupils from a school in Berkhamsted have been crowned national champions after fighting off the competition in the schools’ table tennis championships.

The girls from Greenway Primary won all three of their matches in the BUTTERFLY National Schools Table Tennis Championships on April 3 to be crowned Under 11 Champions.

At the championships held in Wolverhampton, Riley Jannese, Clemence Courtney, Lucy Miller, Annabel Howe and Ava Baker edged out defending champions Fox Primary with a 5-3 defeat.

Ava Baker, who was part of the winning squad, said they were blown away with their victory.

She said: “It’s really spectacular because we went all the way from winning the first competition to winning the nationals. It feels crazy and we never really expected it but it feels cool and we’re really happy.

“We were all really supportive of our teammates and definitely our coaches Mr Loczy and Mr Lewis helped a lot. They helped us train and learn how to play properly.”

Team coaches Kai Lewis and Mark Loczy: “We are so proud of the team who all played an integral part on this long, arduous journey. Most importantly, we are proud of how well the team conducted themselves.

“They showed great respect for their opponents and supported their opponents at every stage. We hope the determination and perseverance, our team showed, will, inspire our future generations. Well done to the team on a thoroughly deserved victory!”
