Police investigating an arson attack on a children’s play area in Watford have arrested two teenagers in connection to the fire.

A 15-year-old boy from Bushey and a 16-year-old boy from Watford have been arrested in connection to the fire at the Waterfields Recreation Ground, off Shaftesbury Road on Tuesday, May 28.

A large amount of paper was set alight between 4.15am and 4.25am and was put on top of a slide which caused extensive damage to the equipment.

Emergency services were called after a man who was walking his dog noticed the fire.

PC George Lewin, investigating, said: “This was a mindless act of destruction that has resulted in £10,000-worth of damage to a public amenity. I would like to reassure residents we are doing all we can to trace the individuals responsible.

“Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time? If so I would like to speak to you as soon as possible.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact PC Lewin on george.lewin@herts.pnn.police.uk or the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 41/47673/19.
