Pupils at Maple Cross JMI Nursery School headed to nearby Woodoaks Farm last month to learn about the farm’s circular economy and create their own summer wreath.
The children heard from Melanie from the Golden Rose Flower Farm, who reuses cardboard for weed suppressant and old fencing for her sweet peas to climb. Steve the farm ranger described how leftover fruit and veg peelings help make nutrient-rich compost, while John the farmer lauded the benefits of letting wildflowers grow to feed pollinators.
Finally, Ben of the Creative Juices Brewing Company explained that spent grain from brewing beer goes towards locally produced cattle feed and becomes the base for the dog biscuits sold at Pumpkin’s Wildlife Hospital.
Armed with flowers from Melanie and radishes proffered by local farmers, the children then helped to create an enormous summer wreath symbolising the circularity of ecological processes.
