TRANSPORT GAPS: Tube stations including Northwood Hills and Ruislip Manor not chosen for step-free accessibility study

Transport for London (TfL) has revealed that step-free renovations at 17 Tube stations have been given the green light.

However, plans to upgrade 13 others, including Northwood Hills and Ruislip Manor, have been put on pause.

Currently, 93 out of 272 stations on the London Underground network have step-free access, which allows easier access for wheelchair users, those with mobility issues, and parents with prams.

South Harrow, Upton Park and Willesden Green are just three of the 17 stations which will now undergo detailed feasibility studies to determine whether access should be improved.

However, stations such as Rickmansworth, Moor Park and Grange Hill failed to make the shortlist, despite residents previously raising concerns about their lack of accessibility.

Stations shortlisted are reportedly not guaranteed to be completely redeveloped, as according to TfL this will depend on finances and if private developers can be secured.

Other stations could be reconsidered in the future.

The chosen stations are used for up to 1.5 million journeys throughout the year.

Speaking to NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews, TfL chief customer and strategy officer Alex Williams said: “Making more Tube stations step-free is a major part of our work to make the transport more accessible.

“More than a third of Underground stations feature step-free access and we’re working towards the Mayor of London’s ambitious target for 50 per cent of the Tube network to be step-free by 2030.”

Deputy Mayor of London for transport Seb Dance said: “The Mayor and I are committed to making our transport network as accessible as possible.

“It’s great to see that these 17 stations will proceed to feasibility studies as part of the next stage of TfL’s step-free access programme.”
