Tough Ten Awards

Published on: 18th February 2019   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Dozens of local residents, volunteers and councillors attended the Tough Ten presentation ceremony to give out donations to the beneficiaries for 2018.

The 36th presentation evening was held at Breakespeare School, which welcomed the parish council, councillors Brenda Kersey, Phil Williams and Sara Bedford, Adam Ginder and other Tough Ten officials and partners.

The evening was opened with a short slide show by committee member Kevin Brown summarising all of the work that has gone into the day. This was followed by a presentation from Lucy Packman on her trip to Cambodia, which the Tough Ten help funned her trip.

The Tough Ten has raised over £6,000 for local charities. In a breakdown, the charities received the following:

  • Ewing Sarcoma £100
  •  Aims £250
  • The Samaritains £500
  • The Monday Club £500
  • Demand £500
  • Abbots Langley Guides £500
  • Abbots Langley Brownies £500
  • Breakspeare School £750
  • Costs towards a defibrillator fitted to the police station £1,000
  • The War Memorial Fund £1,500

Committee member Pat Waterton said the Tough Ten urgently needs more volunteers and committee members if is to continue its long-lasting tradition.

She commented: “Volunteers are essential – we can’t do it without them. We need volunteers on the day, marshals and all sorts of people to help out on the day and we definitely cannot survive with only four members on the committee. We need new people on the committee who have new ideas and we need some younger people.”

Pat added: “It does support the community and it does support a lot of events and youth teams and a lot of people that need things and they can’t get them. We can source equipment or if someone needs money for equipment.

“Over the years we’ve helped people have surgery, special hoists and lifts so people can retain their independence. So it’s great to see the community working together for those less fortunate than ourselves.”

If people want to get in touch, they can see me at the travel agents or by messaging the website or the Tough Ten Facebook page. The 37th Tough Ten will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2019.
