TOUGH TEN: Annual Abbots Langley race to be held in memory of beloved founder

Published on: 24th May 2023   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Abbots Langley Tough Ten committee has announced that this year’s race will be dedicated to founding member George Harrison, who passed away earlier this year.

George, along with village policeman Reg Hunt, came up with the initial idea for the Tough Ten, which was originally a 10-mile road race aiming to raise money for police charity Mencop.

Since that first race 41 years ago, the Tough Ten has become one of the biggest regular events in the village calendar, and a massive fundraiser for many charitable causes. It now includes 3km, 5km, 10km and Park Run events.

George was an avid runner, having competed in the Olympics in the 60s as part of the marathon team. He also coached various international athletes for more than 50 years at a number of local schools.

The Tough Ten committee said of George: “Many of his young runners recall how he would pick them up and drive them all around the country to different events. If he saw the ability in them, he was more than prepared to nurture it.

“Hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents’ lives will have been touched by George over the years.”

In honour of George’s = achievements and his role in setting up the Tough Ten, this year’s race will be held as a memorial for him. It will take place at Manor House Playing Fields on Sunday, October 1.
