A memorial to 15 soldiers from St Albans who were killed in the First World War has been installed on the street where they once lived.

At a ceremony on Saturday, May 13, Joan Stanley, the niece of one of those named, unveiled the memorial at 1 Kings Road. Also present were Major Rhys Little from the Royal Anglian Regiment and standard bearers from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regimental Association.

Judy Sutton, a resident of Kings Road who has co-authored a book on the fallen soldiers with Helen Little, came up with the idea for the tribute. All proceeds raised from sales of the book were used to fund the memorial, along with money raised from community events.

Judy said: “I can hardly believe this has finally happened after almost five years of hard work.

“I am delighted that we have now honoured their memory and sacrifice in this way, and I thank all of the many people and organisations who have helped bring this about.”

The youngest of the Kings Road men who were killed during the war was 16 years old and the oldest was 38.
