A pair of postbox toppers were vandalised in Stanmore last month, with one having a knitted dog stolen and another having its daffodils plucked and topper torn.
Lynne Jones, one of the craftswomen behind Stanmore’s now iconic toppers, posted on Facebook on Monday, February 27, that the topper on Lady Aylesford Avenue has been vandalised over the weekend.

Together with two other individuals, Lynn has been crafting the toppers since July 2021. Other than a small item being stolen off of a topper that summer, this is the first incident of vandalism.
Speaking to STANMOREnews, Lynne said the incident was disappointing, but that the outpouring of support from local residents was refreshing.
She said: “When the first one got vandalised, there was so much support and people asking what had happened. It was nice to see people appreciated it, and I just thought ‘well it’s just kids being stupid’.
“The second one is worse, because they have destroyed the topper itself, so we feel a bit worse about that one. It’s a shame that people will mindlessly destroy something.”
The toppers include links so passers-by can donate to charities that change depending on the season. The charities supported so far include East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, Crisis, and more.
Lynne said the group of crafters plan to continue making toppers, but are in no rush to replace those that have been damaged.
Stanmore residents who are interested in crafting can join the Stanmore Arts and Crafts Facebook group. They meet weekly on Tuesdays at Stanmore Library.
