TOP SECRET: Security concerns raised over flats proposed near Northwood NATO base

Concerns are growing about the security surrounding 29 new flats in Northwood.

Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) has agreed to the principle of the homes on Knoll Oak, Sandy Lane, close to the Northwood Headquarters (NHQ) base. The application was received on October 10 and validated on November 1.

However, there are concerns that the 29 new dwellings could compromise security at the nearby NATO base, which has been used by the British Armed Forces since 1939.

Councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Deputy Leader of TRDC, told NORTHWOOD&RUISLIPnews: “Whilst there were some concerns raised by NHQ, the Three Rivers Planning Committee, taking on board professional advice, granted planning permission as there were no overriding planning objections. Given that there might be further concerns, the committee agreed to delay approving the planning permission to allow for NHQ to ask the Secretary of State (SOS) to overrule the council and call the application for his consideration.

“In any event, NHQ decided not to seek the review by the SOS on security grounds, thus the planning application was granted permission, subject to a legal agreement with the developer.”

A spokesperson for TRDC said: “Officers remain in contact with NHQ and the Ministry of Defence has every right to seek a call in by the SOS.

“The application has not been approved yet due to ongoing discussion with regards to the Section 106 agreement pertaining to securing an affordable housing review mechanism; however, it is anticipated that agreement will be reached shortly.”

Full information about the plans is available on the Three Rivers District Council planning portal by searching for reference ‘22/1875/OUT’.
