An Abbots Langley football club has been crowned as the top grassroots club in the county at an annual awards ceremony.

Evergreen FC were named as the Club of the Year for Hertfordshire in the Grassroots Football Awards, run by the Football Association, beating around 400 other clubs from across the county to claim the top spot.

Mark Ward, Evergreen’s chairman, spoke to ABBOTSnews about the achievement.

He said: “I’m really pleased, this is a major achievement for the Club and reflects the great work done by so many, as well as our recently renewed England 3 Star accreditation. We provide fantastic facilities and sporting opportunities to the local community.

“To come out as number one out of 400 clubs across Hertfordshire is just incredible.

“The result reflects our fantastic facilities, player pathways and the significant growth we are experiencing. We have a record number of teams this year: an amazing total of 49, across Men’s, Ladies, Boys, Girls and Powerchair. About five or six years ago, we only had one girls’ team, and now we have 10.”

Karl Lingham, chief executive of the Hertfordshire FA, said: “Our role at Hertfordshire FA is to support grassroots football and the many thousands of people who are involved in making the game happen across our county.

“We are always full of admiration for those who give up their time for others, working hard to improve standards and increase opportunities for everyone to play.”
