St Albans residents have raised concerns over the quality of Charter Market, following an alleged decrease in stalls and traffic in the area.
On social media, residents vented their frustration at the council for the shrinking of Charter Market, which was established circa 860 and has been an iconic feature of the city ever since.
Alice Young, admin of the St Albans Voice group on Facebook, said: “The move to gazebos has killed [the market] along with every possible other effort imaginable. [The council] has driven off the traders who have been there for so many decades. They have driven away the casuals by not allowing them to fill the gaps.”
Photos have also been shared comparing the size of the current market to those in previous years.
Councillor Chris White, Leader of St Albans City and District Council, reassured that the images were captured on a day that does not represent the usual quality and success of the market.
He said: “The market is 40 per cent bigger than last year, and we’re reaching 100 stalls on Saturdays. It is thriving.
“When I talk to people outside of St Albans who have visited, they’re impressed by it. We’re never getting rid of it. It’s got a fabulous future and people from neighbouring areas continue to come and visit and enjoy the market.
“It is loved by the council and is a fabulous market that will continue to get get better and better.”
