RIVER MISBOURNE: Thames Water invests £10million to fix flooding problems in Chalfonts and Amersham

Thames Water has invested £10million to fix recurrent flooding in Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and Amersham.

Last year, heavy rain forced businesses to close and caused damage to local properties. In October, £2.5million was put forward to fix the problem.

Now, Thames Water has announced an extra investment of £7.5million, taking the total to £10million.

Danny Leamon, waste performance director for Thames Valley and Home Counties, said: “The new £10million investment will help minimise overflows from manholes and sewers and will also go towards projects to reduce the impact of discharges into the River Misbourne, which we know is a priority for the local community.

“Work to create our new tankering point off Chalfont St Peter High Street is now complete and we are grateful to those in the village for their patience while we carried out this task.

“We hope that, by creating a new access point for our tankers now, we will be able to avoid closing the High Street when tankers are needed.

“We know last winter was extremely difficult and we have been working hard with local stakeholders to devise a range of solutions to reduce the risk of sewer flooding and protect the environment.

“It will take many years to mitigate and will require multi-stakeholder engagement and extensive investment, but we are moving forward and will continue to keep the local community updated.”

Bob Older, co-ordinator of Misbourne River Action, said: “I am very impressed with the speed and amount of work now being carried out along the valley. Having campaigned for remedial work to the local sewage system for many years, I am delighted the residents and shopkeepers of Chalfont St Peter can look forward to mitigation of the risk of polluted flooding in the village.”
