After the strangest of cricket seasons, involving shorter games and no promotion and relegation, the grounds at Rickmansworth Cricket Club get turned into a home for kids’ football as Croxley Green FC host their matches for 5-10 year olds at the club.
This brings in some much needed revenue which helps keep the club going over the winter period.
Due to the restrictions on cricket in the summer, and the need to spend upwards of £5,000 on making the facilities COVID compliant, the club still finds itself in a difficult situation.
“We had hoped that this was a temporary one-off set of circumstances in 2020” said a concerned club spokesperson, Paul Blackwell, “but already we are unable to train indoors until at least Christmas, due to new restrictions. If this get worse with regards to an enhanced lockdown, we might see a very different offering next spring and summer.”
The local Herts League have sent round a questionnaire which appears to indicate matches next year for much of the league will be regionalised to keep travel to a minimum.
Matches will be shorter and perhaps the traditional cricket tea will be consigned to history.
Despite all the concerns, the club still welcomes new members who would like to play for the club in 2021, or who can offer help in fund-raising to make up the shortfalls required.
The club’s website is rickmansworthcc.co.uk.
