TEE-RIFIC TIME: Hatch End Golf club celebrates Ryder Cup with own tournament

Turns out Rory McIllroy, Justin Rose, and Tommy Fleetwood are not the only golden golf players in Europe, as Grim’s Dyke Golf Club teed off their very own Ryder Cup last month.

While the real Ryder Cup drama was unfolding overseas, Grim’s Dyke members were busy writing their own fairway fairytale on Friday, September 26.

The format took on a pairs greensomes competition, where players from both sides tee off, the best shot is picked, and then each person takes alternate shots from there.

Handicaps were paired carefully to keep things as close as possible and it seemed to work as most games were close and ended in a draw.

Jack McCormack, one of the organisers, shared with Pinnernews: “We tried to keep handicaps together in matches to keep it is as tight as possible and it seemed to work as the majority of the games were close and ended in a draw!

“I think the standout moment from my game was our opponents (the opposing captain Paul Little) giving us a generous putt on 18 as he thought nobody deserved to lose and the match was played in a great spirit.

“The response from members was pretty good on a normally quiet part of the day so was good to get people up there when they wouldn’t be.”

While the action was taking place on the course, the official Ryder Cup was streamed live across three days in the Gilbert Room, and the club even served themed cocktails to mark the occasion.

And while McIlroy and co may have made the headlines, Grim’s Dyke’s golfers proved that golf isn’t just about winning, but spirit, sportsmanship, and a good laugh at the final hole.
