Garston station will receive pay-as-you-go technology as part of a major £20million government investment.
Passengers will be able to pay for their travel using a bank card or smartphone by tapping in on and out station readers, automatically guaranteeing the best price available on that day. The new technology will be installed at the station by December 2023.
The technology is currently available at more than 350 stations across London and the South East, with the figure estimated to reach more than 400 by the end of the year.
Lib Dem Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “Anything that makes train travel simpler is to be welcomed, so I am pleased that Garston Station has been chosen for tap-in and tap-out facilities.
“However, the limited number of stations announced shows a lack of ambition from the government. If we want to meet our net zero targets and reduce congestion on our roads, rail travel needs to become cheaper and easier.”
