A charity has teamed up with Watford Community Housing (WCH) to repurpose a tree that was uprooted in Abbots Langley during Storm Darragh.
The Sunnyside Rural Trust (SRT), which offers training and work experience for over 170 vulnerable people, has committed to turning the tree trunk into benches, which SRT says will “gift a second life to a much-loved feature of our community”.
In a post on Facebook, SRT said: “By crafting the trunk into benches for local residents to enjoy, we hope that people will be able to continue to enjoy this magnificent tree – a landmark that holds special memories for many. The trunk is already being cut into sections and placed, ready for carving in the near future.
“Sunnyside is also helping clear the rest of the branches and some of the smaller pieces of wood will be crafted by our trainee woodwork team at Sunnyside. We will create polished slices of wood to gift to residents who would like them.”
The charity also said that WCH has agreed to replace the tree which was felled during the storm.
