A Chorleywood resident has collaborated with a disability activist to share the importance of blind representation in the media.
Betsy Griffin was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age two, which damaged her vision. Now aged 11, she has already inspired the masses, having published her own novel, spoken on radio shows, and taken part in public talks to spread positivity and inspire others.
Last month, Betsy joined forces with Lucy Edwards, an influencer who lost her sight in her right eye at age 11 and her remaining eyesight at age 17.
The pair discussed the importance of understanding different levels of blindness, their experiences being blind, and the importance of seeing diverse characters in the media ahead of the release of Lucy’s debut novel, Ella Jones vs The Sun Stealer.
Lucy shared on her social media: “I wanted Ella to exist in this world because when I was younger, I didn’t have any blind heroes to look up to that were just like me but now Ella exists, and I feel so emotional that Betsy can have that representation.”
