TAKE CARE: Stanmore community stick together in the face of burglary spike

After a spike in the number of burglaries in Stanmore, members of the community are banding together to offer advice on how to stay aware and vigilant.

There has been an increase in reports of burglaries around the area and now the community want to offer advice which instead of scaring people is useful and will help advise residents to act in the future.

Ilana, creator of the Stanmore Group on Facebook which has over 8,000 members, noted how important it is to make residents aware in a way that isn’t constantly negative but supportive.

She said: “It can be constantly worrying being fed negative information.

“A recent burglary took place when someone was at home and they messaged their WhatsApp street group and they all came out.

“What was fantastic was to see the community come together to help.”

Ilana recently wrote an article which was posted to the group, featuring advice from Gideon Hajioff who is the chief instructor of Krav Maga for the DSD Academy and also has an extensive security background.

Gideon spoke to StanmoreNews, he said that it is about being logical and not being embarrassed to look around at people and your surroundings.

He said: “It’s about not burying your head in the sand and acknowledging the dangers.

“People shouldn’t be paranoid but should be conscious of their surroundings.”

Gideon added that even though he runs a series of classes in self-defence, a physical response should be used last.

He said: “The physical part is the last moment, and it’s a very small percentage of the response.

“It’s about having the awareness to look and the confidence to act.”
