A woman has celebrated her birthday by taking on an epic swimming challenge for a Stanmore-based charity.

Eleanor Reddington, who recently turned 70, completed 70 one-mile swims in locations across the world to raise money for spinal chord injury charity Aspire.

Swimming in the Irish Sea, the USA and various pools across the UK, Eleanor chose to complete her final swim on her birthday on July 6 in the Aspire Leisure Centre in Stanmore.

Eleanor has raised more than £3,000 for the charity, adding to the more than £15,000 she has raised participating in the Aspire Channel swim since its inception in 2003.

Speaking at the end of her challenge, Eleanor said: “Turning 70 is a milestone that I wanted to mark in a meaningful way. Swimming that last mile at the Aspire Leisure Centre seemed the perfect way to celebrate.”

Paul Parrish, director of fundraising and marketing for Aspire, was there to applaud Eleanor’s final mile.

He said: “We are a very lucky charity to have someone as committed as Eleanor supporting us.  It was an honour to swim with her on her birthday. We spend the money that Eleanor raises very carefully and this will directly support Aspire’s programmes, providing invaluable support to people affected by spinal cord injuries.”

At the time of writing, Eleanor had raised £3,207. You can donate to her fundraiser here.
