Bushey councillor and chairman of Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) Laurence Brass has faced criticism from Hertsmere Conservatives that he “bottled it” on a vote on investment in Israeli companies.
The Herts Palestine Support Coalition submitted a petition of 1,525 signatures which alleges that the Hertfordshire Local Government Pension Scheme has £95million invested in companies “complicit in grave human rights abuses against Palestinians”.
On Tuesday, October 21, HCC voted though a motion which asked the Pensions Committee to review their investment in Israeli companies.
Cllr Brass decided not to vote on the motion.
In a post of Facebook, the Conservatives wrote: “Yesterday, virtue-signalling activism was put before community unity and cohesion.
“One man could have stood up for his community. But he bottled it.”
Cllr Brass said: “It doesn’t surprise me that Hertsmere Conservatives are continuing to stir up animosity against me. I’m grateful to the many people who have contacted me with their support and understanding.”
