STEPPING UP: Berkhamsted FC to face challenges as they prepare for new division

Published on: 6th June 2023   |   By: Darius Morgan   |   Category: Berkhamsted F.C

Berkhamsted FC are set to face up to 250-mile round trips next season after the decision on which league they will be play in was finalised.

The Comrades won the Southern League Central Division in April and faced a month-long wait to see if they would be entered into the Premier Central or the Premier South.

It has been decided that they will play in the Central, which massively impacts where they will be playing football next season. The nearest ‘derby’ matches the club can expect will be against teams such as Hitchin Town and Royston Town.

The extended travel is not the only challenge the club are facing.

A spokesperson said: “To play at this level, several ground improvements are required at the Glencar Community Stadium and the running costs of the club have significantly increased, not least travel; some of our away fixtures are against teams more than 130 miles away.”

Amidst financial concerns, it was announced on May 27 that the club and manager Chris Devane had mutually made the “difficult decision” to part ways.

The following day, former AFC Dunstable manager Steve Heath was appointed.

Steve said: “Only a very special opportunity would have tempted me back into management, and this is that opportunity. Everyone at Berko knows this will be a real challenge, and we’ll need to pull together as a club to meet that challenge. I’m excited to get started.”

The club are seeking support from Berkhamsted businesses and residents ahead of the new season. Anyone interested is asked to contact the club at upthecomrades@mail.com or speak to director Andrew Sparrow on 0749 006 9479.
