STANDING UP: Community comes together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day in St Albans

Published on: 1st March 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

Monday, January 27, marked Holocaust Memorial Day and people across St Albans came together to stand in opposition to “prejudice and hatred”.

St Albans School received a thought-provoking visit from the family of Holocaust survivor and activist Kitty Hart-Moxon OBE.

Kitty is a Polish-British survivor who was taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau with her mother in 1943, when she was just 16. She has since dedicated her life to raising awareness.

The school took to Facebook to say: “To remember the victims of the Holocaust, Peter and Moira Hart described the life of Peter’s mother Kitty, who was imprisoned in Auschwitz as a teenager.

“Their description of Kitty’s experience in the camp served as a powerful warning against the horror of hatred and racism.”

On the eve of the memorial, Mayor of the City and District of St Albans councillor Jamie Day hosted an annual service to commemorate the day at the city’s Masorti Synagogue.

Local rabbis shared moving stories about Holocaust survivors, including Kitty.

The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Annie Brewster and Daisy Cooper, MP for St Albans, both read eyewitness testimonies while the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss CBE gave a moving address.

The Lord-Lieutenant lit a candle in memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and other genocides, followed by a minute’s silence.

Mayor Day said: “Our commemoration service was one of many thousands held around the world.

“It was great to see our community stand together and honour the millions of people who lost their lives, showing their opposition to prejudice and hatred.”
