A student at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School has been invited to join the Wales under 17 squash team after a highly impressive 10th placed finish in the European Squash Federation’s (ESF) Welsh Junior Open (ESFWJO) 2024.
Hugh Padayachy, who was competing in the under 15s boys’ tournament between Friday, September 6 and Sunday, September 8, lost his initial round of 16 tie against Omar Sherif, but bounced back with two big wins to secure a top 10 finish.
After beating Gethin Poole in four games, Hugh beat Samuel Hann in a tense five game match.
Despite being under pressure towards the end of the tie, Hugh was able to regain control of the match to beat Samuel.
Hugh was then beaten in his final match which determined if he would finish 9th or 10th against Oliver Flett, but he had an incredible tournament which earned him a call up to play for Wales’s under 17s.
Hugh is now ranked 218th in the ESF boys under 15s junior rankings, and 981st overall for boys at junior level.
