‘SPLIT DECISION’: Watford councillor nearly impaled by tree due to Storm Darragh

A Watford councillor experienced her very own Final Destination scene after a large tree trunk smashed through her windscreen.

On Saturday, December 7, councillor Rue Grewal was heading back to her home from The Dick Whittington pub after spending the afternoon canvassing with the Conservatives. She was driving down Little Oxhey Lane, just seconds away from home, when disaster struck.

Speaking to Watford News, cllr Grewal said: “I saw this tree, and knew I had to make a split decision. I couldn’t go right because of oncoming traffic, and I couldn’t go left because of the fence. I knew the only way to get through this would be to accelerate through.

“If I had stopped the car, I would have been impaled or crushed. I have no idea how I managed to walk away without a scratch.”

The tree flew down into cllr Grewal’s windscreen, missing her by mere centimetres. The councillor drove home and contacted her insurance company. It was only when she returned to her car to take photos of the damage that she realised the extent of the incident.

Cllr Grewal has lived with stage four cancer since 2017 and is a primary carer to her parents. She explained the feeling in the house is “not jubilant”.

She continued: “The house feels like I’ve died. It’s terrifying. It’s definitely going to take some time but right now my head can’t go anywhere else other than what could have happened.”

Cllr Grewal said that she is struggling to sleep due to nightmares and is receiving counselling.

She said: “I’m a Christian, and I keep questioning now what is the meaning of life? Why have I been saved? If God saved me, why? The difference between life and death is a question of centimetres.”

Storm Darragh has caused carnage across the UK and resulted in more than 500 reports to Hertfordshire County Council about flooding and fallen trees.
