Residents of Northwood Hills are asking for measures to be taken to prevent thieves from stealing from local shops.
Taking to social media, several individuals stated that staff from some of the area’s retail businesses are constantly having to deal with criminal activity, which varies from shoplifting, robberies and even assaults.
One shop that is said to be targeted often is the Northwood Hills Co-Op on Joel Street, located on the road’s main shopping promenade.
A resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “It would be good to find out what the Co-Op and the local police are going to do about what the poor staff are having to endure.”
According to data on Police UK’s online crime map, there have been 24 reported crimes close to this shop between January and May 2024. Eight of these were instances of shoplifting, four were robberies, and two were under the category of violence and/or sexual assault.
A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “We are collaborating with business and retail leads right across London to identify what matters to them, including the safety of shop-based workers and shoplifting.
“A London-wide roll-out of Op Retail is now in place, allowing more effective and streamlined reporting of shoplifting where no offender has been detained or violence occurred.”
A spokesperson for the Co-Op said: “We have invested more than £200million over recent years in preventative measures, including body-worn cameras, covert and non-covert guarding, the latest interactive CCTV, and more.”
