Hertsmere Borough Council has ruled that Sky Studios Elstree North will not be expanding onto green belt land.
At a meeting on Thursday, March 21, members of the Planning Committee voted six to five that the expansion on green belt land would affect the character of nearby Borehamwood as well as destroying important natural habitats.
Sky had applied for permission to extend its existing studios by 70,000 square metres between Rowley Lane and the A1 bypass.
RADLETTnews spoke to borough and county councillor Michelle Vince, who said: “I’ve walked around the fields that Sky wanted to build on so many times. Whacking a studio over them wouldn’t be fair on future generations.”
Particular attention was drawn to the campaign against the expansion due to the presence of one particularly striking protester. The Well End Fox reportedly delivered a speech on the importance of protecting the green belt for local wildlife at a protest outside Sky Studios in March and has since been asked to visit campaigns around the county.
