The Under 15 girls’ football team from The Reach Free School (RFS) has made history after winning a prestigious national title.
The team secured the English Schools Football Association Under 15 PlayStation Small Schools’ National Cup on Monday, May 19.
The Rickmansworth team’s 2-1 victory marks a significant achievement, as it is the first national sporting trophy in the school’s history.
The final, held at the 26,000-seater Hawthorns stadium in West Bromwich, saw the team enter as underdogs against a formidable Bede’s Upper School side, who are known for their impressive footballing pedigree.
However, it became clear from the opening whistle that the RFS girls were not intimidated.
Displaying exceptional teamwork, tactical discipline, and unwavering determination, they matched their opponent stride for stride.
Both teams battled fiercely in the first half, with Tilly Brown from the RFS team breaking the deadlock through “world-class” turns and a cross, followed by a “superb” strike from Evie Harrison.
Bede’s equalised in the first half, setting up a tense finale.
The decisive goal came against the run of play, a testament to the RFS team’s “never-say-die” attitude. A piercing through-ball from Maisie Williams was met by Holly Faine, who coolly slotted it past the advancing keeper.
The girls saw out a tense final few minutes to secure the victory.
